Types | |
---|---|
Types (Japanese: タイプ Type) are a property for Pokémon species and certain Master Trainers specializing in specific types. Each type has three properties: which types it is super effective against, which types it is not very effective against, and which types it is completely ineffective against. There are 18 types in total.
A Pokémon may have either one or two types. For instance, Charmander is a Fire type, while Bulbasaur is both a Grass type and a Poison type. With the current 18-type system, there are a possible 324 different type permutations; meaning that there are 171 type combinations. A move may have only one type. Master Trainers usually chose or are destined towards a type, and usually focus on that specific type and only capture Pokémon with that type.
Most Gym Leaders, members of the Elite Four, and some other Trainers have specific types they specialise in, usually due to interest in the Pokémon that fit the type.

Trivia[]
- Originally, there was only 15 types; Dark and Steel were then discovered, followed by the discovery of Fairy type over a decade later.
- There are many Trainers who don't work with a specific type of Pokémon or are Multi-type Specialists (mostly Champions), including Alder, Cynthia, Diantha and Lexi.
- The latter however, did specialize in Psychic-type before becoming a Multi-type Specialist.
