Mega Evolution (Japanese: メガシンカ Mega Evolution) is a state of evolution that occurs in certain Pokémon who are fully-evolved. Mega Evolution is seen as the form of which a Pokémon takes at its highest limit of power due to the connection and bond between itself and its Trainer. Unlike normal evolution, however, Mega Evolution isn't a permanent state and reverts either once a Pokémon has fainted or when the Pokémon no longer needs the extra Power.
Mega Evolution has only so far been seen occuring in Hoenn and Kalos.
Mega Evolving[]
In order to Mega Evolve, both Pokémon and Trainers must be present and have a strong bond with each other. The Pokémon must also be holding the appropriate Mega Stone and its Trainer must have a Key Stone. However, there are exceptions to this, the only known case being Rayquaza, whom Mega Evolves after swallowing the Meteorite which acts as its Mega Stone.
Key Stones[]
A Key Stone is an item that must be owned to inhibit Mega Evolution. These Key Stones are vital in allowing a Trainer to Mega Evolve their Pokémon. All Key Stones are the same, but many Trainers hold their Key Stones in different accessories. It was said that there are only a limited number of Key Stones, however, this has never been discovered as tale or fiction.
Mega Stones[]
A Mega Stone is an item which is held by the Pokémon in order to inhibit Mega Evolution. Each Pokémon has their own corresponding Mega Stone unique to their species. It's not known just how many Mega Stones there are in the world.

Mega Trainers[]
There are several titles for people who can Mega Evolve their Pokémon or are related to Mega Evolution. They are as follows:
- Mega Destined: Those who are destined to Mega Evolve their Pokémon but have yet to possess the ability to. Those who are Mega Destined can only be determined by Mega Masters who can determine the strength of the Trainer and realize the potential within them and their Pokémon. There are many who never know they are Mega Destined because of this.
- Mega Successor: A Mega Trainer who's ability to Mega Evolve their Pokémon is passed down from an ancestor usually destined to become a Mega Master.
- Mega Trainer or Mega Wielder: A person whom is able to Mega Evolve their Pokémon but hasn't mastered Mega Evolution. They have no ties to any Mega Masters and have learnt of their ability independently.
- Mega Apprentice: A Mega Trainer who has been personally selected by a Mega Master to be trained by.
- Mega Master: Those who are a Master at Mega Evolution. Not all people who can Mega Evolve their Pokémon can or will become Mega Masters.
- Mega Philosopher: Those who are unable to Mega Evolve but have studied Mega Evolution thoroughly.

Primal Reversion[]
Primal Reversion (Japanese: ゲンシカイキ Primal Regression) is a state of evolution similar to Mega Evolution that occurs in Kyogre and Groudon. Primal Reversion is different in that not only is a Mega Stone not needed, but the Pokémon are in fact reverting to their original state in the Primal age. However, it still isn't a permanent state and reverts either once a Pokémon has fainted or once the power surge is no longer necessary.
