Brief Syopsis

Plot

A young girl is seen escaping what seems to be a lab with an unidentified Pokémon in her bag. As she gets sandwiched between the workers from the lab on one side and alien-looking people in strange uniforms on the other, the Pokémon teleports itself and the girl away from the lab and away from danger.

Three months later

Lexi arrives in the Alola region alongside Zinnia. They walk through a town before finding themselves a B&B to stay at, dropping off their bags. When there, they check in and leave their things, before they agree to go on a walk to explore the island. While heading out, they walk along a trail, seeing lots of new Pokémon neither of them have seen before. Lexi asks Zinnia how she's feeling now she's free, in which she reveals she feels strange but she's glad she's here with her. Seconds later, they spot a girl; Zinnia wants to follow her and before she knows it, Lexi is being dragged along to a Plank Bridge.

The Pokémon that the girl was holding escapes her bag as they reach the Plank Bridge, happy about the new environment it is in. Suddenly, a flock of Pikipek attack the defenseless Pokémon, leaving the girl worrying - she spots Lexi and Zinnia, and shout to them to save her friend Nebby. As she asks this, one of the Pikipek rushes towards Lexi, which Litten counteracts. Once the Pikipek is dealt with, Lexi and Zinnia rush in and guard Nebby from further harm before Nebby uses its power to destroy the bridge. Before Lexi, Zinnia and Nebby fall to their doom, Tapu Koko flies through the Pikipek and bring the pair back to safety. Thankful for rescuing Nebby, the girl gives Lexi a Sparkling Stone that appeared after Tapu Koko's departure.

Lexi, Zinnia and the girl then return to Iki Town and get greeted by a man named Professor Kukui. Kukui introduces the girl as his lab assistant, Lillie, before the kahuna, Hala, returns from resolving a problem on the island. He introduced himself, when a woman runs in and startles them all. Lexi realises its Professor Burnet and the two embrace with warmth. Professor Burnet reveals to the group who Lexi is and their history, before Lexi is introduced to everyone in Professor Burnet's life. Lillie then explains the encounter she and the two girls had with Tapu Koko, in which Hala gets touched by the moment. Hala notices the sparkling stone and asks if he could borrow it, to which Lexi obliges, before inviting the pair to a festival the following day. They agree, before they head home, unaware they're being watched.

In the morning, Lexi and Zinnia head for the festival; however, they run into the alien-looking people who seem preoccupied by auras surrounding Iki Town. They briefly talk to them, which both girls are confused by, before leaving. At the festival, Hala and Kukui reveal that it is an event where Pokémon battles are held in honor of the Guardian Pokémon in Alola. Zinnia and Lexi battle in honor of Tapu Koko, and the entire town watches, including Lillie. After Tapu Koko approves of the battling, Hala returns the sparkling stone, which is now converted into a Z-Power Ring. Hala explains the Z-Ring's powers and the Z-Crystals that can only be acquired by participating in the island challenge, where Lexi must travel to all four of Alola's islands to become the island challenge champion. Later, Lillie visits Lexi and Zinnia and the trio head to Kukui's lab. Lillie reveals she doesn't have many friends, before Zinnia takes a photo of the three of them and Nebby. In the lab, Kukui explains more about the island challenge, which includes taking trials and getting recognized by each island kahuna. As the four leave the lab, the sky momentarily darkens. Kukui dismisses the event as an unforeseen eclipse.

The next day, Zinnia helps Lexi prepare for her upcoming challenges. As they prepare to battle, Professor Burnet arrives and reveals that Lillie has gone missing. The pair head to Melemele Meadow, where they find Lillie, who has lost Nebby. Lexi finds a small opening and crawls inside, emerging in the Seaward Cave, where she finds Nebby in the company of the same alien-looking people, introducing themselves as Dulse and Zossie. They leave, and Lexi returns to Lillie with Nebby in tow and they both leave the meadow to be greeted by Kukui. Kukui reveals he's going to meet a friend of his, in which he invites them to join. Lillie makes her excuses to leave, and rushes off. Confused by her hasty departue, Lexi and Zinnia accept, and they head off with Kukui to meet Faba - a member of the Aether Foundation. They talk for a while, and Zinnia tells Lexi she is unsure of him. Despite this, when Faba invites them to Aether Paradise, Lexi accepts, much to Zinnia's dismay.

The group explore the Aether Paradise and play with all the different Pokémon there; before they come to meet the Aether Foundation President Lusamine. They learn in this time with Lusamine that the company is responsible for making Aether Paradise a sanctuary for abused Pokémon. In the middle of the meeting, a weird creature from another universe appears attacks Lexi and after a short battle retreats to its own world. That's when Dulse and Zossie enter the scene once again. Lusamine introduces them as the Ultra Recon Squad, and explains that she is working with them to protect Alola from an otherworldly Pokémon called Necrozma. They talk more for a little while before Zinnia asks Lexi about finding Lillie, which intruiges Lusamine. Zinnia shows Lusamine a photo of Lillie, before Lusamine offers the pair to stay the night. They accept, and they are shown to their room by Wicke. Lusamine turns to Faba, and asks him to find her.

In the middle of the night, Zinnia stirs as she has a dream about a mysterious creature; among other "beasts". She is shown a scene of two young children playing, while a shadowed woman disregards them and fantasises in a room with lots of plans around her. Zinnia is watching the woman, before something emerges from her head and lashes out at her - Zinnia realising its the same beast as they previously saw - before suddenly waking. She looks around her to see its a dream, before returning to sleep.

The next morning, the pair are woken by Lusamine, who reveal that she has something to show them. They head downstairs, only to find a distressed Lillie. Lexi angrily demands answers, in which Lusamine tells her that Lillie had stolen something from her - Nebby. She reveals that Nebby is a special creature that they need for their research. Lillie cries out not to listen, but Lusamine slaps her and tells her to be quiet. She grabs Lillie's bag but is surprised when Nebby jumps out and disappears - running away. She demands for everyone to find it, before asking for Lillie to be taken away. Lexi and Zinnia look on worryingly, but unsure of who is at fault here, are unable to intervene. Lusamine apologies and suggests they probably leave. They are unsure, before Zinnia pulls Lexi away saying it's probably for the best.

As the pair leave, Zinnia ends up collapsing - before having a vision of Lillie running away with the Pokémon as Faba tells her to stop. Lillie continues to run, but Faba demands the Aether Foundation catches the "brat" as she's ruining his evil plan. Moments later, Zinnia awakens and reveals to Lexi that she believes her dream is actually a vision of the past, and so, the two head back inside. They are met by Faba, who when they demand to see Lillie, stands in their way. Zinnia reveals she knows what he's up to, which he denies. In that second, Nebby appears, in which it attacks Faba. Everyone is blown back by the attack, before Faba screams for it to be captured and killed. Realising what he has said, in a rage, he attacks them. Wicke then appears, temporarily halting Faba. Faba reveals that she isn't to interfere as she "has no idea what's going on" and soon Wicke realises she's been tricked all along. She shouts to Lexi that Lillie might be with the President, but it would be hard to get to them. Faba ambushes them as more employees show up, resulting in the trio having to battle. The team defeat the employees and Faba again, resulting in Faba beng unable to stop the girls heading to the president's office.

Lexi and Zinnia then run into Lusamine and Lillie. It's revealed that Lusamine is Lillie's mother, as they witnesses a darker side of Lusamine and learns that Nebby is being sacrificed to open an Ultra Wormhole to the place where Necrozma dwells. Nebby appears but Lusamine catches it, dragging it into her arms. Lillie tries to reason with her mother, but fails to do so, resulting in Lexi going after Lusamine.

A mysterious man catches up to them, introducing himself as Gladion - Lillie's older brother and Lusamine's son, who was contacted by Lillie when she was running away. He tells his mother she is not ready to fight Necrozma on her own, but again, Lusamine ignores her children and opens the wormhole anyway. She challenges Lexi to prove her children she can handle any threat with her Pokémon, but even a loss is not enough to deter her, and then crosses over. After the Ultra Wormhole closes, Lillie checks on Nebby, who has now transformed into a new form - Cosmoem.

--

Soon after, Dulse and Zossie appear and gather the scene around them, before angrily shouting at Lillie for being so idiotic to allow Lusamine Nebby's power. Lexi and Zinnia intervene before Dulse and Zossie begin to battle them. The battle ends with Lexi having defeated them both, and they then explain that now that Lusamine has proven to be untrustworthy, Lexi is their only chance to stop Necrozma. Gladion explains what Necrozma is, and finds the Sun Flute used by Lusamine to open the portal. Seeing this, Dulce and Zossie reveal that they can open the Wormhole again, but only if there sole purpose is to retrieve Lusamine and leave. They agree, and as they do so, a man named Phyco and Soliera arrive, revealing the Moon Flute and a second Cosmoem. They reveal they have to wait until midday in order to play the flutes, and so, they wait.

Lillie and Gladion have a proper reunion, and reveal what they know about their mothers plans, revealing that their mother has had an unhealthy relationship with the unknown for some time. They reveal that her plans to find Necrozma heated up a few years ago when she was contacted by a mysterious man, who, had asked something of their mother. They don't know what, but know that the instance led her to become mad, and was what drove Gladion out of their home.

As midday arrives, Lexi and Zinnia reach the Altar and both prepare to play their flutes. After playing their flutes, an odd power in the Altar forms and takes Lillie's bag to the source of the power. Nebby is taken from the bag and evolves into Solgaleo, while the Ultra Recon Squads Cosmoem evolves into Lunala. Lexi boards Solgaleo while Zinnia boards Lunala, and they are taken to Ultra Space with its new power, but an Ultra Wormhole suddenly opens, and Lusamine falls out of it, followed by a levitating Necrozma. Necrozma immediately spots Nebby and assaults it, ultimately besting it in a battle and merging with it. Lexi then fights the merged Necrozma. But despite losing, it manages to escape - the girls try to return back the way they came, but are suddenly thrown into an appearing Wormhole, thrown from Lunala. All the while, other wormholes appear all over Alola, sending Ultra Beasts across the land. The light all over the region also disappears, and the archipelago is plunged into darkness.
