A region is a country the Pokémon world. There are at least nine different prominent regions, with many more yet to be explored.
Most regions are structured similarly. They all have an array of towns, cities and routes, which connect them. These routes are often varying in Typically, a region has its own Pokémon League, which includes eight Gym Leaders. Once these eight are defeated, Pokémon Trainers can challenge the regional Elite Four and Champion (except Johto, which shares the Indigo League with Kanto). Alola does not have Gyms but instead hosts the island challenge and only recently created a Pokémon League. Each region also has a Pokémon Professor who teaches new Trainers about Pokémon and typically gives out Starter Pokémon to them. This is not the case for Paldea where the Director of the School does so.
Location[]
As areas, both Kanto and Johto are the closest geographically and are attached by the Pokémon League. Hoenn alongside Sinnoh are also said to be apart of the same continent, with Sinnoh being north of Johto. Alola is the closest region to the equator, being the most tropical of the regions currently known. Galar is the most northern region thus far with Kalos being its closest neighbouring country southern to it, with Paldea southern to Kalos. Unova is the most western region, being the farthest from the rest.
Culture[]
Each region has its own unique cultural differences to one another. Kanto is an industrial region, not particularly rich in historic landmarks but rather a progressing region. Johto is a very historic rich region, deep in culture. Hoenn is a psuedo tropical region with a vast water areas. Sinnoh is a mountainous region with a historic industrial background. Unova is the most westernised region with a vast array of different cities. Kalos is the most ecclectic region, with a mixture of conceptual towns and cities. Alola is an archipelago of islands consisting of tropical landmarks and beach themes. Galar is an industrial region with a rich history, and finally Paldea is a vibrant open air region surrounding a large crater.
Crime[]
Crime, namely organised crime is strife throughout the Pokémon world. While most if dealed with by the police force, often, larger groups are left to operate in the shadows. Looker, Former Chief of International Police revealed to Lexi that the reason a lot of orginisations are left to operate is due to their connections or seniority within the community. Looker had infact admitted that he was aware of Cyrus's workings, but was often coerced by his senior staff that it was being dealt with.
Team Rocket were the first prominent organisation that caused a wave of other groups to form in different regions; and often they don't operate out of one region. Team Rocket, housed prominently in Kanto, while its revival of the group operated in Johto. Team Aqua and Team Magma operated in Hoenn, Team Galactic in Sinnoh, Team Plasma in Unova, Team Flare in Kalos, Team Skull & the Aether Foundation in Alola, Team Yell & Macro Cosmos in Galar and Team Star in Paldea. While Team Rocket, Team Aqua, Team Magma, Team Galactic, Team Plasma, Team Flare, the Aether Foundation and Macro Cosmos are formed around a certain ideal, Team Skull, Team Yell and Team Star are formed more around a certain person. Team Skull were a bandit gang formed by Guzma, Team Yell were superfans and crazed supporters of Marnie & Pierce while Team Star was initally created as a bunch of rogue students who were bullied.
